International Day of Forests 21st March, Climate Action – Green Kashmir Project

Tararkhel, 21 March 2024— In a bid to safeguard the environment and revitalise communities in Kashmir, the Kashmir Development Foundation (AJK) encourages people to take Climate Action and take part in the groundbreaking initiative, the Green Kashmir Project, coinciding with the International Day of Forests on March 21st.

Since 2015, the Kashmir Development Foundation has been at the forefront of environmental conservation efforts, rallying volunteers and stakeholders to take proactive steps to preserve the region’s natural beauty and ecological balance. With an unwavering commitment to sustainability and community empowerment, KDF volunteers working in partnership with local community organisations and civil society have successfully planted over 15,000 trees across ten towns and villages spanning four districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir: Mirpur, Sudhnoti, Poonch, and Bagh.

The Green Kashmir Project is a clarion call to action, urging individuals to pledge their support in the noble endeavour of reforestation and environmental stewardship. KDF invites citizens to commit to planting and safeguarding at least one tree annually throughout their lifetime, particularly in their places of origin and heritage, as well as near educational institutions, transportation hubs, religious centres, and recreational spaces.

“By fostering a culture of collective responsibility and environmental consciousness, we aim not only to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change but also to foster sustainable livelihoods and resilient communities in Kashmir,” remarked Ms Saima Qadeer, Managing Director of the Kashmir Development Foundation.

As part of the Green Kashmir Project, KDF offers a unique opportunity for individuals to commemorate the lives and legacies of their loved ones through tree planting. Donors can make a meaningful contribution by sponsoring the planting of a tree in honour and memory of a cherished individual. With a flexible donation structure, supporters can determine the amount they wish to contribute and, in return, receive a personalised certificate acknowledging their commitment to environmental conservation and community welfare.

“Through the KDF Climate Action—Green Kashmir Project, we aim to create a sustainable future for generations to come,” said Sardar Aftab Khan, Chief Executive of the Kashmir Development Foundation. “Together, we can make a difference in preserving the natural beauty of Kashmir and safeguarding the environment for future generations.”
